Summary of U.S. VPS Use (Transferred)

Original post address: http://obmem.info/?p=777
This is a usage summary from Observer, a member of the Global Host Exchange Forum. I think the author's summary is very sincere, so I repost it. On the one hand, it can help webmasters avoid detours when purchasing US VPS hosts, and on the other hand, it is also convenient for you to check when you buy a VPS yourself.
Disclaimer: All network speed evaluations are based on the US-US (apt-get) and US-Australia (filezilla download, VPN) network speeds. I do not have the conditions to test the domestic network speed.
In chronological order:
1.mediatemple dv base: 50 dollars, 20G hard disk, 512M memory, 1T traffic, similar to openvz

  • Test: Performance unixbench4.1.2-wht score is 30 points, limit the number of inodes, limit tcp connections to 300, limit a bunch of
  • User experience: It crashes as soon as there is some traffic, and the memory is completely unable to use the 512M, it is limited in kmem. You can see 1G memory, but you can never use even 512M; the service is terrible, the support staff does not understand the technology very well and can only be perfunctory. Although it is a large company, the average waiting time for a ticket is still nearly 8 hours, which is unbearable for a $50 plan.
  • Comment: I have never seen such a bad VPS

2. rapidxen: 7 dollars, 5G hard disk, 128M memory, the flow calculation is quite strange, even if it is 600G, xen

  • Test: unixbench4.1.2-wht scored 60 points, the network speed is very poor
  • User experience: The performance is poor in Xen. I set up a PPTP VPN, but the system was very slow when there were 10 people online. The service is pretty good, and the ticket was returned faster than I expected.
  • Evaluation: It was cost-effective at the time, but now it seems like a waste

3. ramhost-kansas data center: $12, 40G hard drive, 512GB memory, 500G bandwidth, openvz

  • Test: unixbench4.1.2-wht 280 points, the network speed is awesome
  • User experience:
    • The performance is excellent. It is the only VPS provider that provides munin monitoring. It can be seen that Ramhost is not oversold at all.
    • Technically, compared to the single and rigid CPU limitation methods of other businesses, they use a unique burstable CPU technology. Any program is given 100% of the dual-core CPU for 10 minutes, and then according to the plan speed limit, the 512M plan will be limited to 15% of the CPU on a single core. This allows users to fully utilize the overall performance and avoids the occurrence of abuse by a single user.
    • Service: Very good service. After receiving the complaint from MPAA about my abuse, they did not shut down the VPS directly, but sent me an email to notify me to handle it. Maintenance will be notified one month in advance, and there will be no unnotified downtime in one year of use. The downside is that maybe the stall is too big and there is not enough staff, so the ticket returns have been very slow recently. The boss is a tech geek. He wrote everything from the panel to the system himself, so the plan is quite flexible. He is also very proficient in Linux and I learned a lot from our communication.
  • Evaluation: Although this price is not very competitive at the end of 2010, it is still highly recommended. It is my only recommendation among openvz.

4. photonvps: $16, 35G hard drive, 512M memory, 500G traffic, xen

  • Test: unixbench4.1.2-wht score is over 300, the network speed is great
  • User experience: The performance is very outstanding, and it was considered the most cost-effective Xen at the time.
  • Evaluation: I didn't continue to use it because there are stronger ramhosts, but it's still very good.

5. I seem to have used a pretty bad VPS, but I don’t remember what it was.
========The above is the experience in 2009, dividing line=======

  • After 2010, wht updated UnixBench and said that UnixBench4 is very inaccurate for multi-core testing and that previous results are garbage.
  • So I used unixbench5 to do the test afterwards.
  • Attached is the comparison of scores of 4 and 5:

Ramhost Atlanta data center: i3 540
unixbench4 400 points
Unixbench5 960 points single core
unixbench5 1700 points dual core 4 virtual cores

========The following is the experience starting from 2010, dividing line=======
6. dmehosting: $10, 50G hard drive, 512M memory, 2T traffic, openvz

  • Test: unixbench5 single-core and multi-core scores 700 points
  • User experience: Disk IO deviation, poor MySQL performance, and serious oversale
  • Rating: Not recommended

7.directspace: $10, 60G hard drive, 1G memory, 5T traffic, openvz

  • Test: unixbench5 single-core and multi-core scores 900 points
  • User experience: Overbooking was very serious. It was fine when I first moved in, but it became a tragedy a week later.
  • Rating: Not recommended

8.alienvps-original: 23 dollars, 100G hard disk, 2G memory, 2T traffic, openvz

  • Test: unixbench5 single-core and multi-core scores 800 points
  • User experience: good performance, not oversold, high cost performance
  • Rating: Recommended. (Please continue to read 9 before making a decision)

9.alienvps-For sale: $12, 100G hard drive, 2G memory, 2T traffic, openvz

  • User experience: alienvps was sold in late November. The new owner tried very hard to oversell it. The performance was very poor.
  • Rating: Not recommended

10.burstvps: $10, 50G hard drive, 1G memory, 1T traffic, openvz

  • Test: unixbench5 600-700 points, low inode limit of only 500,000
  • User experience: It's OK, nothing too performance-intensive. From my other tests, it's a little worse than 8, but much better than 6 and 7. It's worth mentioning that the network speed to each computer room is good. For a while, I used it as a transit host.
  • Rating: Neutral.

11.linode: $20, 16G hard disk, 512 memory, 200G traffic, xen

  • Test: unixbench5 around 800 points
  • User experience: Xen is very powerful. Although the score is average, the database performance is very powerful. The disadvantage is that the hard disk and traffic are too tragic. I quit after using it for a few days; it’s worth mentioning that after I quit, I couldn’t even log in, which was really cruel.
  • Rating: Recommended

12.ramhost-atlanta computer room: 12 dollars, 40G hard disk, 512 memory, 500G traffic, openvz

  • Test: unixbench5 single-core 960 points, multi-core 1700 points, the *only* VPS with improved multi-core performance
  • User experience: It uses better hardware than the ramhost-kansas data center, so the performance is more buggy. To put it more intuitively: when I am very satisfied with alienvps, the load average usually hovers between 0.5-1.5. Ramhost-atalanta serves the same traffic and configuration, and its load average generally hovers around 0.1-0.2.
  • Rating: Highly recommended

13. yardvps-openvz: $15 a year, 15G hard drive, 128M memory, openvz

  • Test: No unixbench test was done
  • User experience: Disk IO often hovers at a tragic speed of 500K/s-3M/s. It sometimes takes half a minute to log into the VPS, and basically nothing can be done.
  • Comment: I have never seen such a tragic openvz, I have learned a lot.

14. yardvps-xen: 8 dollars, 15G hard disk, 512M memory, 1.5T traffic, xen

  • Test: No unixbench test was done
  • User experience:
    • The disk IO is very good, often reaching 100M/s, and the performance is also very good. Currently, no traffic has been added, and we are just doing some tests. The database performance experience alone is at the same level as alienvps and linode.
    • Yard is a pseudonym of photonvps, and the internet speed is quite good. This xen can be regarded as one of the most cost-effective xen.
  • Rating: Recommended.

15. citynethost: $12 for half a year, 15G hard drive, 512GB memory, 1TB traffic, openvz

  • Test: No unixbench test was done
  • User experience: I gave up at first because the network speed was too slow, but later I found that the speed was quite good, close to 1M/s. This company is in Egypt and is very unstable. There was a record of websites and all VPS being offline. There were also obvious signs of overselling in terms of performance.
  • Rating: Not recommended.

16. nordiacvps: 6 dollars, 15G hard disk, 512 memory, 1T traffic, openvz

  • Test: No unixbench test was done
  • User experience: I bought a VPS to test the speed of Hetzner's data center. The speed to the United States and Australia is good. I have always been curious about the speed in China.
  • Rating: Neutral

17. 2host; $15, 50G hard drive, 1G memory, 10T traffic, xen

  • Test: No unixbench test was done
  • User experience:
    • Their hardware is very powerful, 15000RPM RAID1+0, Dual Xeon QuadCore
    • The Internet is so tragic. I have never seen such a tragic Internet. Otherwise, it would be a really good deal.
    • Rumor has it that the boss is an Indian guy, disappears frequently, and has polarized reviews, but I couldn't resist the tempting introduction and ended up hitting my head in the face.
  • Rating: Not recommended

============The dividing line of the VPS that I heard is very good but I have never used=============
a. quickweb, 7 dollars, 25G hard disk, 512M memory, 250G traffic, openvz

  • The blog site lowendbox with a traffic of 200,000 PV this month is hosted on a 80M xen host on quickweb.

b. buyvm, 15 dollars a year, 15G hard disk, 128M memory, 500G traffic, openvz
13 dollars, 60G hard disk, 2G memory, 3T traffic, 4 cores, openvz

  • Currently voted third for LeB
  • The reviews on the hostloc forum seem pretty good
