Enterprises or individuals should not register domain names in China

I think that whether it is a company or an individual, when building a website, you should not register a domain name in China, because there are huge security risks involved. If you have already registered a domain name in China, you should transfer the domain name abroad as soon as possible to avoid risks.

Policy risks

The biggest risk of registering a domain name in China is the policy risk. For websites, a "Sword of Damocles" is immediately hanging over their heads. Its name is "clientHold (domain name resolution is suspended)". Your domain name may be suspended at any time for various reasons. Although you paid for and registered this domain name, in China, the domain name you registered does not belong to you at all. Your domain name is always in a "clientHold (domain name resolution is suspended)" state. Your domain name may be permanently banned just because of a message or comment on your website.

One of the earliest well-known cases here is Luo Yonghao's Niubo.com, which once gathered a group of famous people such as Liang Wendao, Han Han, Lian Yue, and Chai Jing. The daily traffic of Niubo.com exceeded one million. But after the domain name was held by HiChina ClientHold, the traffic of the website quickly disappeared. A few years later, even the domain name of Niubo.com was inexplicably snatched away by someone.

In China, domain name registrars are very arbitrary in enforcing ClientHold. In addition to administrative departments, domain name registrars have even implemented ClientHold after receiving complaints from ordinary customers. For example, in the 2011 "HC Network Disconnection" incident, HiChina received an infringement complaint from Kohler Company of the United States, accusing HC360 of having an infringing store page, so it put the entire HC360 domain name on ClientHold. HC360 later launched an "Anti-Hanwang Hegemony" website to accuse HiChina of this behavior, but the incident eventually came to nothing and HC360 transferred the domain name to a foreign country (Registrar: NAME.COM, INC.).

In contrast, when registering a domain name abroad, there is basically no policy risk, except for malicious infringement of the domain name registration, and it will not be "client held". Your domain name belongs to you.

Therefore, when registering a domain name, you must register it in a country ruled by law such as the United States, so that your domain name truly belongs to you.

Why not register a domain name in China

Technical risks

When registering a domain name in China, most of the time, you do not have full management rights over the domain name. Many of the rights that originally belong to you may be "functions" provided by them, and you have to pay extra to buy them. In addition, unlocking and migrating domestic domain names is usually troublesome. Domain name registrars will set various conditions (for example: charging fees, renewing for one year before giving the password, mailing supporting documents, etc.) to increase the difficulty of domain name migration, making it very difficult to transfer and transfer domain names.

When registering a domain name abroad, the registrar will usually give the user full control and transfer rights over the domain name. Domain name transfer and domain name transfer can be done completely online without any restrictions.

Domain name management agency

From the perspective of management agencies, cn domain names are national domain names and are managed by CNNIC, the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC). The specific registration work is carried out by agents authorized by CNNIC. International domain names such as com are managed by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), and the specific registration work is also performed by agents authorized and certified by ICANN.

Therefore, please do not register or use cn domain names for no reason.

In summary, for enterprises, there are huge risks in placing domain names in China. If Article 37 of the MIIT's "China Internet Domain Name Management Measures" is strictly enforced, it will force enterprises to transfer domain names to China so that they can "review any domain names that are not registered in China." This is why this clause has caused widespread panic in the industry.
