1. Installation
wget https://www.python.org/ftp/python/2.7.8/Python-2.7.8.tar.xz
tar -xvf Python-2.7.8.tar.xz
cd Python-2.7.8
./configure
make
make install
make clean
make distclean

2. Backup

Back up old python

mv /usr/bin/python /usr/bin/python2.6.6

Establish soft connection

ln -s /usr/local/bin/python2.7 /usr/bin/python

3. Set up yum
vi /usr/bin/yum

Find the first line #!/usr/bin/python and change it to #!/usr/bin/python2.6.6

The upgrade is now complete!
