2.1 Basics: Building Your Website <br /> After the last edition of this book was released, countless people asked me how to make money with AdSense. I'm always happy to help them, but many of them don't even have a website.
Here’s the basic fact: if you want to make money with Adsense, you must have a website. There is no alternative to this. But don’t be afraid, there is nothing easier than building a website. With a website you can make real money with it.
Here I will briefly introduce how to build a website. You can also find a lot of relevant information on the Internet. I will tell you some useful URLs. If you already have your own website, you can skip this section and go directly to 2.10 to see the part about increasing Adsense income.
2.2 Choose a good name for your website <br /> First of all, you need to think of a domain name for your website, but this is not as simple as it sounds. Almost all the good words in the dictionary have been registered, and many of them are used for investment.
However, this doesn’t mean you can’t have a beautiful and cheap domain name. A great way to do this is to connect two words with a hyphen (for example: www.adsense-secrets.cn). And if you don't want a .com domain name, there are still many good .net and .biz domain names waiting for you.
So the first step should be to register a domain name and then purchase server space. One of my favorite sites is Globat, which often offers special deals such as free or reduced-price services for a year. In fact, domain name registration service providers usually provide a complete set of solutions: from proposing domain names, registering domain names to providing server space, and even including services for submitting websites to search engines. When you're coming up with a domain name, you can consider ten alternatives and they'll tell you which ones are available. The price of purchasing a domain name generally does not exceed $20/year. If you can't find a good domain name to use, then I recommend checking out moderndomains.com or bestnames.com. There are many companies out there that make a living by peddling domain names. You'll find some great domains here, but prices can range from $50 to $50,000. Carefully consider the cost-effectiveness of a domain name. A good name may be expensive, but it will bring a steady stream of traffic to your website. But then again, 12 years ago no one knew what Yahoo, Ebay, and Google were.
2.3 Choose a server provider <br /> You need to find a web server provider and put the website on his server. You also have a lot of options, depending on how much you want to spend and what kind of services you need. Generally speaking, 50MB of space (enough to store 100 web pages), complete statistical reports and 7*24 hours service are required. Once your website has problems and is inaccessible, you are losing a lot of money every hour during this period. So, make sure that the server provider will repair your server in the shortest possible time.
Professional website servers tend to be more expensive, but the security is much higher than those free space storage services, so it is worth the money.
2.4 Design your website <br /> In the past, you had to know HTML to create a website. Now software like Microsoft Frontpage or NVU saves you from this trouble. As long as you can use Word, you can create a website. You can have a lot of fun using these software, or simply hire a professional to do the work for you.
2.5 Create Content <br /> In Chapter 8, I will explain in detail how to create content and how to get more traffic and higher Adsense revenue by optimizing content. Now all you need to remember is that the content of your website determines what kind of ads will appear on your website. This is how Adsense works: users click on ads because they are relevant to the content on your website.
But building a website just for a high-priced keyword is not worth it. Google doesn't like such sites, and neither will your visitors. If your website doesn't attract visitors, it will be difficult to generate traffic, links, and ad clicks.
But there are still many simple ways to create content (as you’ll see in Chapter 8).
Also keep in mind that there are certain sites on which Google won't display its ads . If you plan to place Adsense ads on a gambling website, it is better to give up the idea as soon as possible. For controversial content, I suggest you refer to the Adsense Terms of Service to determine which content is allowed by Google and which is not. It has been clearly stated above.
2.6 Search Engine Optimization <br /> Once your website is built, you need to let people know about it. One way to do this is to get it ranked highly on search engines. Among the thousands of search engines on the Internet, only three are the most important: Google, Yahoo and MSN (for domestic webmasters, Baidu is equally important – Lao Jian’s note). In Chapter 17, we'll discuss some specific methods for improving your search engine rankings.
If you want to take a shortcut, there are many Internet companies that do this. They will submit your website to the search engines and optimize your website until it appears in a very high position in the search engines. Submit Express provides some free services, I hope it can be helpful to you.
2.7 Links <br /> Search engine rankings depend on many factors. One of them is the number of external links your website has. At least that's how Google thinks: if you have a site about model railways, and a lot of other model railway sites link to your site, then that means model railway enthusiasts think your site is pretty good. Search engines will be willing to recommend your site to people who are searching for model railways. This way, you can get a lot of traffic for free.
Exchanging links with other websites is a good way to get external links. You can even create a page on your website dedicated to them. In Chapter 17 you will see many tips and strategies for search engine optimization.
2.8 Adsense-Start making money!
Once you have completed the above steps, you are ready – you can start making money with Adsense. The application steps for Adsense are very simple and easy to understand.
First, you need to tell Google whether you are representing a company or an individual. This is important because they need to know where to send your check. Then, you have to choose between contextual ads, search ads, or both. (Contextual ads are a better option, but I’ll tell you how to profit from search ads, too.)
Once your application is approved, just copy and paste a few lines of code into the web page and you're done.
2.9 Google’s Policies
Adsense is working. I know it’s working because I see the statistics, the checks, and the bank deposits. All the methods I used to increase Adsense income were completely "legal" and were strictly implemented in accordance with Google's policies. This is crucial. You can cheat on Adsense, but Google is pissed and the consequences are severe. You can make a lot of money by playing by Google's rules, but if you put ads on pages with no content or encourage people to click on ads, the result will be that you will be kicked out and you won't get a penny.
Here you can see what actions are allowed and what are prohibited. Particular attention should be paid to the following aspects: - Don't change the code. You must copy the Adsense ad code exactly as it is on the web page. Don't change anything! The Adsense program allows you to choose the colors and placement of your ads (these are the very factors that increase your ad revenue). Taking the risk of changing the ad code could get you kicked out of the game for life.
- Don't give in to the temptation. Once ads appear on your web pages, it's better to stay away from them. You might be tempted to tell your visitors to “click on my ad,” but once Google catches on to that, you’re screwed. Of course, Google also hopes that visitors will click on more ads, but the premise is that they are interested in the ads themselves, not for other reasons. In fact, as long as you use the right method, they will naturally click.
- Website content issues
Google is very careful about where its ads appear. It doesn't want advertisers constantly complaining to it that their ads are appearing on a gambling or porn site, or on a page with more ads than content. If your website content has this problem, change it as soon as possible. - The most serious cheating behavior of invalid clicks is clicking on your own ads. Using certain programs to automatically click ads also falls into this category.
It's easy to make money by following the rules, don't do anything out of the rules!
2.10 It’s as easy as 1-2-3 !
You only need to do the following three steps to increase your Adsense income. - Optimize ads to make them more appealing to visitors;
- Optimize the website to bring more targeted advertising (Google says "more relevant content");
- Tracking visitor behavior is like shooting in the dark if you don't know which of your methods are working and which are not.
Good tracking tools can tell you a lot about your visitor behavior, answering questions like “What are they looking for on my website?” and “What ads do they click on?” Once you understand the meaning, the day of making a fortune is not far away!
But this is not so easy to understand, otherwise there wouldn’t be so many people crowding Adsense forums to complain about their measly Adsense bills. In fact, these people are not lazy, they just don’t know how to do it.
